Calvert Trust – Challenging Disability Through Outdoor Adventure
June 11th, 2014On Saturday 17th May 2014, the sun shone on Low Wood Bay for the second annual Low Wood No Wood Cardboard Boat Race, an event – sponsored by Caterkwik – which helps to raise money for the Lake District Calvert Trust.
If you’re unfamiliar about what the Calvert Trust actually does, then please take the time to have a look through their website by clicking here. In a summary, the Lake District Calvert Trust is a residential outdoor centre for those with disabilities, offering life changing experiences in the heart of the Lake District.
But, back to the race! On a day which raised nearly £4000 for the Trust, six races were raced by boats including Mario Kart, D-Day Plus 70, Cardboardia, Your Mum and – our favourite – Bananas In Pyjamas before a lunch consisting of a BBQ and some well-earned beer.
Organised by Commodore Ben Barry and timekept by Derek Armstrong, there were a number of races for those who wished to race again – in the form of a time trial – before the big one, the Armada Finale, which featured stormy water cannons and a sea monster (okay, a professional flyboarder) which was won by SS Ginge.
After the Finale, a raffle took place, with prizes including a mini-iPad, a bottle of Prosecco, bottles of wine, a pass for one hour wakeboarding on Windermere and much more as well as a prize-giving for the best dressed paddlers (Mario Kart), best dressed boat (Golden Goose), best youth team (The Ark), the best sinker (Grey Walls) and the winner of the time trial (Richie’s Jolly Rogers).
At Caterkwik, we feel days like, supporting a worthy cause whilst raising money, will go a long way in helping the Lake District Calvert Trust.
